How the schema markup generator works
Schema markup is a small block of JSON-LD that describes a page in a vocabulary search engines understand — this is a product, it costs $89, it’s in stock, it has 128 reviews. Pick a type, fill in the form and the code on the right updates as you type. Empty fields are left out, so you never publish blank properties, and fields Google marks as required or recommended are labelled.
The tool also converts plain entries into the formats Google expects. A recipe with 10 minutes’ prep and 30 minutes’ cooking becomes "prepTime": "PT10M", "cookTime": "PT30M" and "totalTime": "PT40M" (ISO 8601 durations). An event starting at 10:00 on 21 November 2026 in India becomes "startDate": "2026-11-21T10:00:00+05:30". Prices lose their currency symbols, currencies become three-letter codes, and any < in your text is written as \u003c so a stray </script> can’t break your page.
Where do you put the JSON-LD code?
Paste the whole <script type="application/ld+json"> block into the HTML of the page it describes — in the <head> or anywhere in the <body>. In WordPress, use a header-code plugin or your SEO plugin’s custom schema box; in Shopify, edit the product or page template. A page can carry several blocks, for example Product plus Breadcrumbs. The details in the markup must match what visitors see on that page.
Which schema type should you use?
- Blog post or news story
- Article (Blog post / News article)
- Product page in a shop
- Product, with an offer
- Shop, restaurant or clinic people visit
- Local business
- Home page of a company
- Organization + Website
- About-me or author page
- Person
- Concert, webinar or workshop
- Event
- Recipe page
- Recipe
- Careers page for one job
- Job posting
- Any page deeper than the home page
- Breadcrumbs
Will schema markup get you rich results?
It makes a page eligible; Google decides whether to show stars, prices or event dates. Some features have been narrowed: HowTo results were dropped in 2023, FAQ rich results stopped for all sites on 7 May 2026, and the sitelinks search box was retired in 2024. That markup is still valid and still helps machines understand the page. Ratings must come from real customers and be visible on the page — invented reviews can lead to a manual action.
Frequently asked questions
- Is JSON-LD better than Microdata?
- Google supports JSON-LD, Microdata and RDFa equally but recommends JSON-LD because it sits in one block, separate from your HTML, so it is easier to add and keep up to date.
- How do I test my schema markup?
- Use the Google Rich Results Test to see which rich results the page qualifies for, and the Schema.org validator to check the markup against the full vocabulary. The buttons above copy your code and open both tools.
- Why does the Rich Results Test say “No items detected” for my FAQ?
- The test only lists types that can produce a Google rich result for your site. FAQ markup on most sites no longer qualifies, so check it in the Schema.org validator instead — if it is valid there, it is fine.
- Can I add schema for a business with no address?
- Local business markup needs a physical address customers can visit. Service-area businesses and online companies should use Organization markup instead.
