How the slug generator works

A slug is the readable part of a URL that names the page, like best-running-shoes in example.com/blog/best-running-shoes. This tool turns any title into a clean slug in a few steps: it converts accented letters to plain ones (é → e, ß → ss, ø → o), turns & into “and”, drops apostrophes so “don’t” becomes “dont”, replaces every run of spaces and punctuation with a single hyphen, and lowercases the result.

For example, “Crème Brûlée: 10 Easy Recipes for Beginners!” becomes creme-brulee-10-easy-recipes-for-beginners (42 characters). With “Remove stop words” on, “for” is dropped: creme-brulee-10-easy-recipes-beginners. With a 30-character limit, “How to Start a Blog in 2026 and Make Money Online” is cut between words to how-to-start-a-blog-in-2026.

What makes a good URL slug?

Short, descriptive and readable: a person should guess the topic from the URL alone. Use the page’s main words, separate them with hyphens, keep it lowercase and avoid dates or numbers that will go out of date (a “2024” in the slug forces a URL change later). Three to six words is usually plenty.

Should I change the slug of a published page?

Only with a reason. Changing a URL means search engines treat it as a new page; if you do change it, add a permanent (301) redirect from the old URL to the new one and update your internal links so you keep the page’s rankings.

Frequently asked questions

Hyphens or underscores in URLs?
Hyphens. Google’s URL guidelines recommend hyphens to separate words; underscores can make words run together for search engines.
Can a slug be in Hindi, Arabic or another script?
Yes. Turn on “Keep non-Latin letters”. Browsers show the words as-is and encode them behind the scenes; Google handles them fine. Use one style consistently across your site.
Should I remove stop words like “the” and “for”?
It’s optional. Removing them makes slugs shorter, but keep them when they change the meaning or make the slug read naturally — “how-to-cook-rice” is clearer than “cook-rice”.
How long should a slug be?
There’s no fixed limit, but shorter slugs are easier to read and share. Under about 60 characters (3–6 words) is a sensible target.
