How CTC turns into in-hand salary
Your CTC (cost to company) is everything your employer spends on you in a year — not what you receive. To get your in-hand salary, this calculator first removes the parts of CTC that are never paid out monthly: the employer’s PF contribution, the gratuity provision and any variable or bonus pay. What is left is your gross salary, split into basic, HRA and a special allowance. From the gross, your own PF, professional tax and income tax (TDS) are deducted, and the rest is your in-hand pay.
It follows the usual Indian payroll structure: EPF at 12% of basic from both you and your employer (or 12% of up to ₹15,000 if your employer restricts PF to the statutory wage ceiling), and gratuity provisioned at 15/26 of a month’s basic per year (about 4.81% of basic), as under the Payment of Gratuity Act, 1972. Company policies differ, so compare the result with your offer letter.
Example: a CTC of ₹12,00,000 with basic at 40% gives a basic of ₹40,000 a month. Employer PF is ₹4,800 a month (₹57,600 a year) and gratuity ₹23,077 a year, so gross salary is ₹11,19,323 a year, or ₹93,277 a month. After your own PF of ₹4,800 and ₹200 professional tax, the in-hand salary is ₹88,277 a month before income tax. With PF capped at the ₹15,000 wage ceiling, the same CTC gives ₹94,277 a month.
Why is my in-hand salary so much lower than CTC ÷ 12?
Because CTC includes money you don’t get every month. Employer PF and gratuity are counted in CTC but go to your PF account or are paid when you leave. Variable pay depends on performance and is usually paid once or twice a year. Then your own PF, professional tax and TDS are deducted from what remains.
Does a higher basic salary mean less take-home?
Usually yes, when PF is on full basic: PF is 12% of basic from both sides, so a higher basic moves more of your CTC into PF and less into monthly pay. It also raises your gratuity and PF savings. If your PF is capped at the ₹15,000 wage ceiling, the basic percentage makes little difference to take-home pay.
Frequently asked questions
- Why doesn’t this calculator work out my income tax?
- Tax depends on your regime, deductions, other income and the slabs for the year, which change in the Budget. To avoid a wrong figure, enter the monthly TDS shown on your payslip or the amount your employer’s tax declaration gives.
- How much professional tax will I pay?
- It is set by each state. ₹200 a month is common (some states charge ₹300 in one month to reach ₹2,500 a year), and some states, such as Delhi, don’t levy it. Set it to 0 if it doesn’t appear on your payslip.
- Is employer PF part of my CTC?
- In most private-sector offers, yes — that is why it is subtracted here. Part of it (up to ₹1,250 a month) goes to the Employees’ Pension Scheme rather than your PF balance.
- Are these rules fixed?
- No. PF wage ceilings, professional tax and the definition of “wages” under India’s labour codes can change. Use this as an estimate and confirm the exact structure with your employer or HR.
